  • Change Thought Patterns: Teach you how to challenge and change negative thoughts.

  • Develop Coping Strategies: Provide tools to manage stress, anxiety, and other emotions.

  • Improve Behaviours: Guide you to replace unhealthy habits with positive ones.

What is a Psychologist?

Psychologists are registered through the College of Psychologists of Ontario (CPO). They usually hold doctoral-level training — either a PhD or Psy.D. They specialize in assessing, diagnosing, and treating mental health conditions. Unlike psychiatrists, psychologists do not prescribe medication.

They use evidence-based therapies like CBT, CPT, and ERP to help people overcome anxiety, trauma, OCD, ADHD, and more. Our online psychologists serve clients across Ontario from home — no travel required.

Frequently Asked Questions About Online Psychologists in Ontario

These are the most common questions we hear from people looking for an online psychologist in Ontario. If you do not see your question here, book your free 15-minute call and we will answer it for you.

What does an online psychologist do?

An online psychologist delivers evidence-based therapy and psychological assessments by secure video. At Virtual CBT Psychotherapy, our clinical psychologists in Ontario specialize in CBT therapy for anxiety, OCD, and PTSD. They also complete comprehensive assessments for ADHD, autism, and mood disorders.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a therapist in Ontario?

Psychologists usually hold doctoral-level training (PhD or Psy.D.). Psychologists can also diagnose mental health conditions and conduct formal psychological assessments. Registered psychotherapists and social workers provide therapy but cannot diagnose or conduct assessments. If you need a formal diagnosis or assessment, a psychologist is the right choice.

Are online psychologists in Ontario covered by OHIP?

No. Psychologist services are not covered by OHIP in Ontario. However, many extended health insurance plans cover sessions with a registered psychologist. Check your plan for details. Learn more about our psychology fees.

Can a psychologist diagnose ADHD or autism online?

Yes. Our clinical psychologists offer online psychological assessments for ADHD, autism, and mood disorders. An assessment includes clinical interviews, standardized testing, and a written report with recommendations.

Can psychologists prescribe medication in Ontario?

No. Psychologists in Ontario cannot prescribe medication. Only medical doctors — including psychiatrists and family physicians — can prescribe. Our online psychologists focus on evidence-based therapy and assessment. If medication is appropriate, we can recommend you speak with your family doctor.

What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can prescribe medication. A psychologist holds a doctoral degree in psychology and specializes in therapy and assessment. A psychologist cannot prescribe medication. Many people benefit from working with both. Our online psychologists in Ontario work collaboratively with family doctors and psychiatrists when needed.

How much does an online psychologist cost in Ontario?

Sessions with one of our clinical psychologists are $270 for a 50-minute session. Many Ontario extended health plans cover psychology fees — check your plan before booking. We do not bill OHIP. Learn more about our fees.
